At The Happy Start, our mission has always been simple: help every child get the best possible start in life.
Last month, that mission took us somewhere special—Washington, D.C.
We were honored to participate in Amazon's 2026 Seller Advocacy Summit, joining fellow entrepreneurs and small business owners from across the country selling products on Amazon to meet with policymakers, share our experiences and Amazon journeys, and discuss the important role that small businesses play in communities nationwide.
For our team, the trip was about more than representing The Happy Start. It was an opportunity to advocate for the families we serve, the organizations we support, our 10% donation pledge and annual giving, and the millions of small businesses that work hard every day to create products, solve problems, and make a positive impact.
Bringing The Happy Start Story to Capitol Hill
One of the most rewarding parts of the experience was meeting with Ohio Senators, Ohio House Representatives, and members of their staffs. These conversations gave us the opportunity to tell the story of The Happy Start and explain how a small business focused on early childhood development has grown into a company serving families across the United States and around the world.
We shared how The Happy Start was founded with a simple goal: creating affordable and accessible developmental resources for babies and young children. What started as a passion for helping families has grown into a mission-driven company that provides high-contrast vision cards, board books, multilingual educational resources, and developmental tools designed to support children during their most important early years.
We also discussed how Amazon has played a critical role in our growth. Like many small businesses, we have used Amazon's marketplace to reach customers far beyond our local community. Through Amazon, we've been able to connect with parents, caregivers, educators, children's hospitals, libraries, and nonprofit organizations across the country.
Our conversations focused on helping lawmakers better understand what it is actually like to build and operate a small business on Amazon. We shared both the opportunities and challenges that entrepreneurs face, as well as the ways e-commerce has enabled small businesses to compete, innovate, and grow in an increasingly digital economy.
Most importantly, we were able to highlight how small businesses use Amazon to create products that make a real difference in people's lives. In our case, that means helping babies develop critical visual and cognitive skills while providing families with affordable developmental resources they can use at home.
Representing Families Across America
As we walked through the halls of our nation's capital, we couldn't help but think about the families, educators, healthcare professionals, and organizations that have supported The Happy Start throughout our journey.
We thought about the children's hospitals that have partnered with us. We thought about the NICUs that have helped inform our products. We thought about the libraries, schools, and nonprofit organizations that distribute our materials to families in their communities. And most of all, we thought about the parents who trust our products during some of the most important moments of their child's development.
Those families are the reason we do what we do.
The opportunity to share their stories—and our own—with policymakers was both meaningful and inspiring. It was encouraging to see genuine interest from congressional offices as they asked thoughtful questions about entrepreneurship, child development, manufacturing, e-commerce, and the challenges facing small businesses today.
Why Small Business Advocacy Matters
Small businesses are the backbone of communities across America. They create jobs, drive innovation, support local economies, and often solve problems that larger companies overlook.
Events like the Amazon Seller Advocacy Summit provide an important opportunity for small business owners to engage directly with policymakers and ensure that the voices of entrepreneurs are heard. By sharing real-world experiences, business owners can help lawmakers better understand how policies affect companies, employees, customers, and communities.
For The Happy Start, participating in these conversations was an opportunity to represent not only our company, but also the broader community of entrepreneurs who work tirelessly to build something meaningful.
Looking Ahead
Our experience in Washington reinforced something we have always believed: small businesses can make a big impact.
Whether we're developing new educational products, expanding multilingual resources, donating materials to hospitals and nonprofit organizations, or advocating for the small business community, our focus remains the same—helping children and families thrive.
We are grateful for the opportunity to participate in Amazon's Seller Advocacy Summit and to share The Happy Start's story with Ohio's congressional delegation and their staffs.
As we continue to grow, we remain committed to making developmental resources more affordable, accessible, and inclusive for families everywhere.
Washington, D.C. was an incredible experience, but it's only one chapter in our story. We look forward to continuing our mission, supporting families, and helping every child get the happy start they deserve.
Thank you for being part of the journey.
