At The Happy Start, we spend a lot of time thinking about trust. As parents, caregivers, and a small business focused on supporting infant development, we know that trust isn't something that can be manufactured overnight. It's built one interaction at a time, one product at a time, and one promise at a time. Recently, that led us to ask ourselves an important question:
What role should artificial intelligence play in our brand?
A few years ago, if someone mentioned "AI" in a conversation, there was probably a decent chance people thought they were talking about Allen Iverson and his famous "Practice" press conference. Today, artificial intelligence seems to be everywhere. It's in the news, in our workplaces, on our phones, and increasingly in the images we see every day while shopping online. As a company where nearly all of our sales come through Amazon, we've watched AI-generated images become more and more common across product listings. In many categories, it's becoming difficult to tell the difference between a real photograph and an AI-created image.
But when it came to baby products, something didn't feel quite right to us.
Drawing a Line in the Sand
After a lot of discussion, we made a simple decision:
The Happy Start will not use AI-generated photography in our Amazon listing images, A+ Content, Amazon Storefront, or on our website.
Instead, we're committed to using:
- Real babies
- Real parents and caregivers
- Real families
- Real products
- Real photography
For us, that decision aligns perfectly with the kind of company we're trying to build. When parents are shopping for products designed to support their baby's early development, we believe they deserve to see authentic images of the actual products being used by real people. We want our customers to know exactly what they're getting and exactly who we are. That's not just a marketing decision. It's a reflection of our values.
To Be Clear: We're Not Anti-AI
We should also be transparent about something else. This commitment doesn't mean we're against artificial intelligence.
In fact, we use AI tools regularly to help us brainstorm ideas, improve workflows, analyze data, and support various parts of our business (like drafting this blog post). Like many small businesses, we see AI as a useful tool when used thoughtfully and responsibly.
Our commitment is specifically about photography and visual representation. When you see a baby interacting with a The Happy Start product, we want that baby to be real. When you see a parent or caregiver using one of our products, we want that person to be real. And when you see one of our products in an image, we want it to be the actual product you can purchase.
If we ever use AI in a way that we believe approaches that line, we'll do our best to disclose it clearly and maintain transparency with our customers.
How We're Showing Our Commitment
As part of this effort, we've partnered with an organization called Not By AI.
Founded in 2023, Not By AI promotes content originality and transparency by allowing creators and businesses to identify content that meets its standards for human-created work. The Happy Start has adopted the organization's 90% rule and has been verified by Not By AI.
As a result, you'll begin seeing a small Not By AI badge displayed on many of our images, particularly within our Amazon listings. While the badge may be small, the message behind it is important. It's our way of signaling that the image you're viewing features authentic photography rather than AI-generated imagery.
Looking Ahead
The truth is, we don't know exactly what the future will look like. Artificial intelligence is evolving rapidly, and its influence on business, marketing, and everyday life will likely continue to grow. There will undoubtedly be new questions and new challenges as technology advances.
What we do know is this. We want The Happy Start to be a brand that parents trust. We want to be authentic. We want to be transparent. And we want the families who support our small business to know that the people behind this company value honesty just as much as innovation.
Our commitment to real photography may seem like a small thing, but to us it represents something bigger: staying true to who we are. Real babies. Real families. Real products.
